![]() ![]() His plans were discovered, but before he could be captured, he killed the High Elf King Finwë, and stole the prize jewels, the Silmarils, which were crafted by the Elves from the light of the Two Trees. Here though, he began to sow seeds of doubt amongst the Elves, whispering that they had been brought here so that their lands in Middle Earth may be stolen from them. He was pardoned but confined and remained under watch. Melkor was brought back as a prisoner, and after a long period, begged for pardon for his misdeeds. A war was fought, Melkor’s hold there was destroyed and many Elves decided to relocate to Valinor with the Valar. When the Valar heard of the existence of Elves, awakened by Illúvatar on the lands of Middle Earth, they set out to bring them to the safety of Valinor, out of Melkor’s reach. Another key Maia character is Sauron, formerly known as Mairon, one of the most powerful of the Maia. In Middle Earth, they took the form of wizened old men, wizards named Gandalf, Saruman, and Radagast. Though you may imagine this is the first time you’ve heard of the Maiar, it might surprise you to know you are well acquainted with a handful of them. ![]() To assist the Valar went the Maiar, primordial lesser spirits. Only the 14 strongest and bravest chose to go and were, from then on, named the Valar. Though they assisted in creation, only Illúvatar can create independent life.Īfter he created the Ainur, he created Eä, ‘The World and All There Is’ and gave the Ainur the option to go and live there and to fashion it as they will. He first created a host of angelic beings, known as the Ainur, who aided in the creation of Arda through ‘The Music of Ainur’ - holy singing and chanting. In The Silmarillion, Tolkien takes us to the creation of Middle Earth, starting with Eru Illúvatar, the supreme deity of Arda (also known as Earth). It is strange how Manwe reacted to Gimli’s arrival because he could have killed him if he arrived at Valinor without invitation and could have spared his life only if he came on behalf of the Men and Elves. It is impossible to describe the Undying Lands without first explaining who the Valar are. įourth AgeAs time passed, other mortals like Samwise Gamgee, a Hobbit along with Dwarf Gimli and his friend Legolas set on a journey to the Undying Lands. They were accompanied by Bilbo Baggins, Frodo, and Hobbits who were some of the mortal beings permitted to enter the land. Third AgeDuring the Third Age, Gandalf, Galadriel, Elrond, and the Ring Bearers, along with Cirdan, the Shipwright sailed towards the Undying Lands to settle there. After this, the Undying Lands were never a part of the world, and the mortal men could never reach it, though the Elves were allowed to sail West if they liked. Mortals were permitted to trade with people in this land but were not allowed to sail from their island to the shores of Aman. The native people and the Elves who could not die lived here for millennia. HistoryThe name ‘Undying Lands’ probably originated among Men. The realm allowed only angel-like beings as well as the immortals. It was separated from the Western shores of Middle Earth by the sea Belegaer. The region covered the island of Tol Eressea and the realm of Aman. A part of Aman inhabited by the Maiar, Valar, and Elves, Undying Lands was the name of a partially-hidden mystical continent at the West of Middle Earth.
